Too much to read in a world of continuously regurgitated content
Writing is not dead, we’re just tired of reading and have no time to think.
I used to tell folks they needed to slow down to speed up. The world seems to be doing exactly the reverse. We’re speeding up to slow down. When we wake from the fever dream of not having to work hard and feeling like we’re being ten times more productive, we may have to delete most of the internet to slow down and discover good ideas again. We won’t have time to sift through all of the same ideas shared over and over again.
I’m writing a book. No generative AI involved. It’s a lot of work, and taking more time than I had hoped. That is ok. During the process of writing, I rediscovered some old ideas and applied them in a new context. These ideas didn’t come from text anyone had written, they came from personal experiences I had thirty years ago, that I never had time to think much about. I needed to write a book to find the time to think about them. I didn’t need to write the book faster. I needed to slow down to speed up.
That’s enough thinking for me today. I have to slow down and go work on the book. If it wasn’t so cold out today, I’d go ride my bike, or lie in a hammock and fall asleep reading an old book.
I hope you’ll find some time to slow down to speed up soon. I kept this short so I wouldn’t take a lot of your time. Thanks for reading!
